What is the Emotional Freedom Technique, and Why Do I Suggest Using It?

I’m sure many of you have heard about how bad stress is for the body. It is a major driving force in the development of chronic disease and has numerous negative effects on our health. However, many of us are busy women! We have jobs, kids, husbands, houses to clean, pets to take care of, social lives to maintain, wellness routines to follow, and a plethora of stressful responsibilities demanding our attention. Learning how to properly handle stress is key to living a healthy lifestyle and will help you find more a more positive outlook on life. This is where emotional freedom technique comes into play! EFT is an alternative therapy used to combat stress and physical pain. The technique focuses on tapping meridian points, also known as energy points, to restore balance throughout the body. It is similar to acupressure and acupuncture; however, no needles are involved. It has been shown to decrease rates, duration, and severity of stress in randomized controlled trials and has been an effective tool used to improve physiological trauma symptoms in veterans. If you are ready to give it a try, here are several essential steps to ensure you are getting the most out of this technique

  1. Determine your "why" - Pick one issue or fear in your life to work on

  2. Scale the intensity - From 0-10, rate the mental or physical pain this issue/fear causes you. 0 being none and 10 being the worst. This is used to assess the effectiveness of the practice later on

  3. Establish a set up phrase - Create a phrase that acknowledges the issues and includes self-acceptance.

  4. Example set up: "even though I am dealing with _________________, I accept myself for who I am and where I am at in life

  5. Tapping -EFT focuses on 9 meridian points including

  6. karate chop (KC): small intestine meridian

  7. top of head (TH): governing vessel

  8. eyebrow (EB): bladder meridian

  9. side of the eye (SE): gallbladder meridian

  10. under the eye (UE): stomach meridian

  11. under the nose (UN): governing vessel

  12. chin (Ch): central vessel

  13. beginning of the collarbone (CB): kidney meridian

  14. under the arm (UA): spleen meridian

  • To start, recite your set up phrase while tapping the KC point 3 times. Then tap the other points 7 times, moving down the body from the eyebrow to the side of the eye to under the eye to under the nose to the chin to the beginning of the collarbone to under the arm and finally to the TH point. While tapping these points, come up with another phrase that acts as a reminder. For example, "The _________ that I feel/am going through is because of __________."
