What Causes Cramping + Herbal Elixir for Menstrual Cramps

In a world filled with quick fixes, women are often told that the only two answers to painful periods are: NSAIDs, or the birth control pill. Although modern medicine has brought many wonderful solutions, it also has a negative side, especially as it relates to women's health.

We also know that the birth control pill stops ovulation, and while that can reduce mensural pain, there are long term consequences of stopping ovulation, and being on the pill in general.

The reason women get cramps while on their period is because of an inflammatory compound called prostaglandins. Prostaglandins trigger uterine contractions, and there are many reasons why they can be elevated in a woman's body around her menstrual cycle. Stress, general inflammation (which can be due to a number of factors), and excess arachidonic acids from over consumption of muscle meats (particularly red meat) and excess eggs and dairy can contribute to increased levels of prostaglandins.

To support blood flow (vital to aid in reducing uterine contractions), reduce prostaglandins and bring overall relief to your cycle woes, try making this powerful elixir below.

Ingredients:

- 2 tbsp. organic ginger (ground from a thumb of ginger, can be purchased at the grocery store or farmers market)

- 2 tbsp. cramp bark (Mountain Rose Herbs has great organic herbs)

- 2 tbsp. peppermint (you can use organic leaves or dried organic leaves)

Instructions:

In a mug, steep herbs with warm, purified water for 12 minutes. Allow to cool, and enjoy warm, as this will help with circulation and support a healthy flow.
