How to Support Your Sinuses

While not everyone struggle with their sinuses, sinus struggles are the cause of so much discomfort for so many. In this post, I'll be diving a little deeper into what the sinuses are and how you can support them.


The sinuses are defined as: a cavity within a bone or other tissue, especially one in the bones of the face or skull connecting with the nasal cavities.


So often, I see women who are struggling with histamine issues or mold issues who are also struggling with their sinuses. Many times, migraines and upper body tension is also driven by sinus dysfunction. Fungi, pathogens, and bacteria can all also be within the sinuses and cause serious pain and discomfort.


To support the sinuses, it's important to understand that congestion and overall sinus struggles are more connected to the gut than the sinuses directly. This is because an imbalance in the gut microbiome will have a direct impact on the sinus microbiome.

To support the sinuses, ultimately, the gut needs to be supported. [If you have complex gut struggles, it might be helpful to seek out functional lab testing.]


To support the sinuses, there are a few, very impactful things that you can do.


Support the Sinuses with Xylitol

Xylitol has been shown to be more effective than saline nasal irrigation and by nature, it is anti-viral, anti-microbial, and also fights mold spores. I suggest the brand Xlear. Both their nasal rinses and sprays are helpful for addressing a number of sinus issues, from infections, to sinus pressure, to allergies.


Support the Sinuses with Probiotics

The strains lactococcus lactis W136 and lactobacillus sakei are especially helpful for those who are suffering with sinusitis or overall sinus struggles. These probiotics can be taken orally where they will impact the gut microbiome, which will, in turn, impact the nasal microbiome.


Support the Sinuses with Nettle

Once again, nettle is an amazing herb for full-body health. As it relates to the sinuses, nettle is soothing for the sinuses, and it also fights histamine and lowers inflammation in the sinuses. You can use nettle in tea form (this is the most affordable way to use it), in a tincture, and through capsules. As a bonus as it relates to women health, nettle also supports hormonal function and helps support healthy pregnancies.


What else can you do?

Acupuncture, EFT (emotional freedom technique), reflexology, neti-pod irrigation, and carefully breathing in peppermint oil can also support the sinuses. Homeopathy is another useful tool that is worth trying as well, and to aid in relieving pressure, you might want to look into using facial gua sha for sinus pain.
