3 Herbs for Adrenal Support

Although many are familiar with the classic "adrenal support" herbal blends on the market, I prefer to take a slightly different approach when it comes to supporting the adrenals by focusing on fueling the body with nutrient dense herbs, and then with herbs that support energy levels. I do this because before we stimulate cortisol, we need to understand that cortisol might be low because of a lack of undernourishment.

My all-time favorite suggestions for adrenal support include these three herbs:

1. Oat Straw - rich in minerals and vitamins, oat straw serves as a tonic for the nervous system. Those who feel exhausted often, tuned out, and are dealing with abnormal cortisol patterns will benefit from drinking oat straw. It's a gradual change, and not an overnight quick-fix, but having a few ounces of oat straw steeped in warm water daily will support the entire nervous system and the adrenal glands.

2. Schisandra Berry - a favorite of mine for the benefits and the taste (although some probably won't agree) this berry is wonderful for mood, thyroid health, and adrenal support. In order to have supported adrenals, the thyroid must be supported. My favorite way to take this in via a tincture, since it's more expensive to buy the loose leaf version of this herb.

3. Ashwagandha - although such a classic, ashwagandha remains such a favorite of mine. It's wonderful for both thyroid and adrenal health, and it can also increase mental clarity. If you are worried about the testosterone effects of ashwagandha, Holy Basil is a better alternative. For women who have PCOS and also very high androgens, I do not suggest ashwagandha. However, as levels lower, it can be a valuable addition.
